And the Winner Is!

This is always one of the most exciting concerts of the year as we present our young artist winners of the vocal, junior and senior divisions of our young artist competition!  The vocal winner performs an aria, the junior division winner a concerto movement and the senior division winner an entire concerto!  

The winners of our Young Artist Competition are: LaReena Mosbrucker in the junior division, Alexandra Funk in the senior division, and Madisyn Mientek in the vocal division. Following their performances, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Suite.

Tickets can be purchased here, or to avoid convenience fees, purchase them in person at the Bismarck Event Center box office.

Young Artist Competition Winners:


Junior Division: LaReena Mosbrucker
 
LaReena Mosbrucker is a senior at Mandan High School. She plays lead trombone in her school's Concert Band I and Jazz Band I. She has received multiple outstanding soloist awards from Umary Jazz Festival and NDSU Jazz Festival. She has received two outstanding preformance rewards at Brass Festival and 4 star awards. LaReena has been in all-state all four high school years; Concert Band, lead trombone in Jazz Band, and lead trombone in Orchestra twice. LaReena plans to double major in Mathamatics and Music Performance at Concordia in the fall.


Senior Division: Alexandra Funk

Alexandra Funk is a junior majoring in Music Education at the University of North Dakota. She has taught private music lessons for five years and looks forward to having a career as an elementary music teacher. She plays in a variety of ensembles at UND including the Red River Trio and the NorthboUND Flute Quartet, and she is on the sub roster for the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra. Alexandra has completed the Royal Conservatory of Music level 10 practical exams on both flute and piano, and she won the gold medal for the highest score in Manitoba on her level 8 flute exam. She currently studies with Dr. Lisa Bost-Sandberg.


Vocal Division: Madisyn Mientek

Making her house debut with the Belle Mehus, Soprano Madisyn Mientek is a senior Vocal Performance major at the University of Mary. Ms. Mientek has performed with a variety of ensembles throughout her collegiate career including The University of Mary Concert Choir, University of Mary Vocal Arts Ensemble, Schola; Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus, The University of Texas at Tyler Patriot Singers, and Cantori: Choral Artists of East Texas. Notable performances include Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte, Mabel in Pirates of Penzance, Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus; and Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors. Madisyn has been a featured soloist for the University of Mary Concert Choir, performing selections such as Benjamin Britten’s Ballulalow, as well as Aaron Copland’s Laurie’s Song. Ms. Mientek has also performed selections from Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore, K. 339 for campus mass. Madisyn transferred to the University of Mary in 2019 from Athens, TX, and currently resides in Bismarck with her husband.
